Menopause & Your Skin: Everything You Need to Know

Menopause & Your Skin: Everything You Need to Know

Menopause brings change. Your skincare should evolve with it.

How Menopause Impacts Your Skin

When it comes to changes through the menopausal stages of a women’s life, there may many, including those that impact the skin. These skin changes happen due to the hormone estrogen fluctuating, with levels dropping as we move through menopause. The ovaries are slowing down and our estrogen and progesterone changes with the most common ages of perimenopause being between 45-55 years.

  • The reduction of important skin ceramides and fatty acids which result in less moisture being retained, leading to potential reduced barrier strength and a thinner epidermal barrier.

  • Skin dryness, dullness and uneven skin tone.

  • Collagen and elastin degradation and loss, whereby we start see to lines, wrinkles and loss of elasticity.

  • Random breakouts, with testosterone having more influence due to this loss of estrogen.

  • Irritation or heightened sensitivities.

Your Menopausal Skincare Solution

A simplified yet targeted approach to skincare is key. Here’s how to nurture your skin during this phase:

1. Nourish and Strengthen the Skin Barrier

Provide extra nourishment and hydration whilst maintaining elasticity and boosting collagen production for your skin by introducing a simple regime. Choosing products that contain nutrients and vitamins that target every stage of your changing skin processes are vital to your overall skin health. Aim for a simplified skincare regime and bring in specialised products only when necessary.

Add nourishment by introducing a face/body oil. Choose a cold pressed vitamin A, E and K rich oil with essential fatty acids (omegas) to help strengthen skin barrier and keep it supple.

Our favourite: Br Organic Rosehip Oil to add nourishment whilst keeping the skin supple and revitalised.

2. Boost Collagen and Antioxidant Protection

Introduce products that contain superior antioxidants to assist with quenching free radicals to help prevent oxidative stress, a leading cause of ageing and increase skin strength by choosing vitamin C, Amino Acids, Niacinamide, and vitamin A. These are good options to assist in boosting collagen production and with supporting elastin.

Must-haves: Bk Vitamin C Face & Eye Serum and Bm Regenerate Anti-Ageing Serum for antioxidant superpowers, and important collagen boosting properties.

3. Support Cell Renewal

Encouraging cell renewal is important as we age, because cellular turnover slows, and gentle exfoliation can aid in keeping skin smooth and bright. But don’t overdo it!

Recommendation: Use our Bx Reveal Exfoliant weekly or fortnightly, combined with our Bc Refresh Cleanser, for a bright, smooth complexion.

4. Target Hormonal Breakouts

When hormonal breakouts rule due to hormonal fluctuations, bring in extra targeted products as needed.

Suggestions: Introduce our Bd Luminosity Face Serum to assist in reducing breakout activity and the redness associated or try our Hydra Balance Bio Cellulose Sheet Mask, which aims to reduce and rebalance.

5. Soothe Sensitivities

When sensitivities are heightened, calm and soothe the skin. Gentle cleansing, cool sheet masks and soothing serums will be key here. Try cool rollers over your serum or mask to help maximise results without stimulating the skin.

Daily Soothers: Bf Restore Face & Body Serum and a weekly Hydra Calm Bio Cellulose Mask for sensitive skin recovery.

Why Sleep Matters More Than Ever

Endeavour to achieve a regular sleep pattern. During menopause this may prove challenging, however, at night, when you are sleeping, specific important responses are happening throughout the body including the skin. The increase of blood flow brings much needed nutrients to the skin, keratinocytes proliferate, collagen builds and repairing of DNA also occurs. For this very reason, introduce a dedicated night-time regime of ingredient actives for optimal acceptance to the skin.

The Internal Connection

Whilst a dedicated and targeted skincare regime is important to a healthy and glowing skin, boost results by paying attention to internal health to nourish the skin from the inside out. Aim for a diet rich in omega fatty acids, greens, proteins and hydrate from the inside out. Reduce sugar, caffeine and avoid alcohol. We recommend seeking specialist advice from a health professional where necessary.
