Discover the wellness benefits of seawater, thalassotherapy, and mindful baths for your skin, mind & body.
There has been increasing global interest and research in providing green spaces within communities worldwide; however, research into water-based environments - referred to as “blue health”- has also gained a following.
What Is Blue Health?
We all recognise that spending time in nature has restorative benefits for people. Blue health specifically refers to the positive effects of being around or interacting with water. Whether it’s the ocean, rivers, or lakes, research shows that these environments can have a powerful impact on our wellbeing - both physically and mentally.
Here, we focus on the sea for its multiple wellness benefits.
Vitamin Sea…
Seawater is rich in many minerals and trace elements including magnesium, zinc, iron and potassium. These minerals can be particularly beneficial for all skin types, but especially for those prone to inflammation, eczema and psoriasis.
Seawater is also known to contain negative ions that may support improved lung function, promoting easier breathing, relieving sinus congestion and hay fever symptoms.
But it’s not only seawater that is beneficial. The sound of the ocean can also stimulate and activate our parasympathetic nervous system, helping to reduce tension and stress, allowing our body to recharge.
Thalassotherapy
Thalassotherapy is a well-known and popular therapeutic practice that takes its name Thalassa from the Greek word meaning ocean. Thalassotherapy involves using ‘products’ from the sea including warmed seawater, algae and mud which are utilised in various ways to induce whole body wellness.
Magnesium, a mineral that’s been gaining attention recently, plays a vital role in the body. It acts as a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems, regulating essential biochemical processes such as blood sugar control, muscle and nerve function, as well as mood and sleep.
Magnesium, commonly obtained through diet or supplements, can also be absorbed through the skin via salt baths. Salt baths may help support your skin barrier, ease muscle soreness and joint pain, promoting relaxation.
While immersing yourself in mineral-rich hot springs or enjoying thalassotherapy may be the pinnacle of wellness, you can still experience many of the same benefits with a soothing salt bath at home.
