Trending & Myth Busting

Trending & Myth Busting

You only have to type what’s trending in skincare or scroll on socials to discover the latest craze within the beauty scene. Here, we explore what’s trending and give our verdict.

Trends We DON'T Love

The ‘Hot’ Girl Morning Shed

An original entertaining tik Tok which created a flurry of content creators to respond with their own versions of this trend. The ‘shed’ involves excessive sleep regime products and techniques for the face, hair and body that include slugging the skin with a host of ingredients, mouth taping, silk hair protectors, eye masks, and internal supplements applied before bed in a lengthy ritual, then removed in the morning for a ‘hot’ girl reveal.

Our verdict: This amusing regime is excessive, but the step of applying actives to your skin is a good one. At night, when you are sleeping, specific important responses are happening throughout the body including the skin. The increase of blood flow brings much needed nutrients to the skin, keratinocytes proliferate, collagen builds and repairing of DNA also occurs. For this very reason, research has shown that night-time is the perfect time to apply actives for optimal acceptance to the skin.

If It Burns, Its Working

The trend ‘if you feel the burn, it’s a good thing’ has gained some popularity. This movment revolves around the fact that a tingling and burning sensation when you apply your skincare means its effective and must be working.

Our verdict: A myth and one of the worst trends we have seen for your skin. Your skincare should never make your skin sting, tingle or burn, period.

The 10+ Step Skincare Regime

The global K-beauty inspired regime based on a ‘more is more’ approach. This popular trend involves a 10+-step lengthy layering regime for results.

Our verdict: Whilst we love the healthy skin mantra of k-beauty, leave the unnecessary extra steps and keep it skin focussed. Your skin will love you for its daily regime of cleanse, serum, SPF without the product overload. Add in optional extras as needed like a face oil, exfoliation, or a face mask once a week.

DIY Skin Needling

With a plethora of home devices available, the trend of DIY’ing with a microneedling modality has risen.

Our verdict: Any DIY comes with caution and concerns which may include an unsuitable device, incorrect use, needle depth, positioning, over-treatment, post care and improper hygiene. We recommend seeking professional advice when it comes to any home-care device use.

Make Your Own Sunscreen

This latest trend which has been popularised by influencers and preferences for making their own natural sunscreen.

Our verdict: We don’t play around with sun safety. Ever.

Beef Tallow

Beef tallow is basically the fat from meat processing. The fad of using beef tallow on the skin is trending for its emollient qualities. Like other oils, tallow can contain vitamins and fatty acids that can be beneficial for the skin.

Our verdict: Although beef tallow may provide nourishing benefits, it can contain contaminants which is source dependent, may be comedogenic and is greasy on the skin. As we are plant based-skincare company it’s a firm no, from us.

Trends We LOVE

1. Skin Sequencing (Skin Cycling)

We love skin sequencing for accelerated results. At Biologi, we always think strategically about when and how you use your products for maximum results and introducing actives in a specific sequence for your skin is an easy but targeted way to increase skin results when you feel your skin is in plateau, to boost your skin for a special occasion or tweak any new skin goals.

It works by introducing different products at night to safely boost and encourage your skins own repair processes without using a multitude of layered products and, without damaging the skins delicate barrier.

2. Simplicity

Our ethos is based on a simple regime that is targeted and focussed for your skin type, condition, goal or concern. We believe in helping your own skin to function the way it should with a regime based on effective cleansing, serum and spf. Bring in additional regime care as needed like an exfoliant, mask or face oil.

3. Supporting Skin, Not Squeezing It

Whilst its super tempting to squeeze a pimple, its a no squeeze from us. Squeezing pimples can lead to further bacterial spread, reduced healing and scarring.

With any breakout, correct home care including cleansing and exfoliation to keep skin clean and clear whilst calming, reducing redness and inflammation will be key. Professional treatments including LED are recommended, and support with internal health can assist.

4. A Healthy Sleep Regime

During the day the skin is working hard to protect itself from internal and external environments, whereas at night, it’s the optimal time to repair, restore and regenerate with actives.

Insufficient sleep can negatively impact your skin, decreasing your immunity and the ability to help heal and repair. Understanding how to regulate and maintain a good sleep pattern is key to exceptional skin health and wellness.
