The Importance of Sunscreen Year Round

The Importance of Sunscreen Year Round

Did you know that even on a cool, cold clear day, UV radiation can be just as high as it is on a hot one. Whilst UV radiation is higher in Summer than in Winter, it is still present every day of the year (1).

When UVA and UVB rays reach and penetrate our skin, they can cause irreversible damage depending on the time of the day, your skin, and how it is exposed.

What is actually happening to our skin when we overexpose it to UV rays?

UVB is responsible for burning and affects the surface layers of the skin. Over exposure leads to an inflammatory response, whereby our blood vessels open up in order to bring in specific helpers to deal with the trauma. It’s this response that creates the redness and swelling of sunburn. UVA, known as the ageing ray, penetrates deeper, and can alter DNA, leading to accelerated ageing.

Photo-ageing aka sun damage can include a premature loss of elasticity, wrinkling/lines, pigmentation, sunspots, dilated capillaries, dull and rough/leathery skin.

Say Hello to Your Everyday SPF

All day, every day without fail even on a cloudy day and particularly when the UV index is over 3. The old adage of “prevention is better than cure” rings true, so future proof your skin by adding a sunscreen daily to your regime.

In a Biologi skincare regime, we recommend applying your chosen sunscreen after your Biologi serum or face oil.

How Do I Choose the Best Sunscreen For Me?

Choose from chemical, physical or a mix of both. Look for broad spectrum protection, meaning the sunscreen blocks both UVA and UVB rays with a minimum of 30+ and a maximum of 50+.

We recommend Mother and The Kind sunscreen as they fit beautifully with the Biologi ethos. Each sunscreen works seamlessly with our serums. They are super kind to the skin, with no known skin irritants, protecting your skin 365 days of the year.

The Kind Sunscreen is a zinc-based sunscreen providing natural looking coverage with SPF 30 broad spectrum, meaning it gives you protection from both UVA & UVB for face and bod

MOTHER SPF30 is a physical sunscreen created using only nine sustainably sourced and clean ingredients and can be used on all skin types and conditions for face and body.

Designed exclusively for your face, MOTHER Universal Face SPF 50 is a hydrating, cooling and calming formula that combines non-comedogenic ingredients for a glowing and healthy skin.

How to Incorporate SPF into Your Skincare Regime (Morning Routine)

Whether it’s sunny or overcast, summer or winter, applying SPF daily is essential for maintaining healthy, protected skin. Here’s how to seamlessly work it into your morning routine:

Step 1: Cleanse
Gently cleanse your face using the Bc Refresh Cleanser with a Biologi Microfibre Cloth to remove overnight build-up and prep your skin.

Step 2: Apply Serum
Follow with your chosen Biologi serum. For example:

  • Bk Vitamin C Serum to brighten and protect against free radicals.
  • Bg Defence Serum to soothe and shield skin exposed to pollution or oxidative stress.

Step 3: For Added Nourishment (if needed)
If your skin requires extra hydration, layer with Br Organic Rosehip Oil and finish with the BL Nourish Lip Serum.

Step 4: Apply Sunscreen
Generously apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30–50 to your face, neck and any exposed areas.
We recommend:

  • The Kind Sunscreen SPF 30 – a zinc-based, gentle option that’s kind to sensitive skin.
  • MOTHER SPF 30 or Universal Face SPF 50 – clean, physical formulas ideal for daily use.

Top Tip: Reapply every two hours when spending time outdoors, particularly after swimming or sweating.
