The Formation of Wrinkles

The Formation of Wrinkles

Understanding wrinkles

Wrinkles are part of natural ageing and should be celebrated, however as skin ageing and wrinkles are the most searched words on the net, we decided to take a deep dive and share our thoughts on wrinkles. Wrinkles, simply put can be defined as a fold, crease or ridge in the skin. We all age, however when it comes to wrinkles, there can be several factors that accelerate their formation and appearance.

Early Signs in Your 20s

During your 20’s you may start to see some fine lines around the eyes or the forehead due to facial movement. These dynamic lines form when we use our muscles for example, when we smile or frown.

Changes in Your 30s & 40s

When we reach our 30’s, previous external factors like sun exposure may start to show in the form of fine lines around the eyes and throughout the 40’s, you may start to see static lines around the eyes and forehead.

Changes in Your 50s+

When estrogen declines during menopause around 50+ this further impacts the ageing processes. When estrogen levels drop, we lose the suppleness and elasticity of our youth. Collagen becomes degraded and past skin history like the sun damage of our youth are on show.

Four Types of Wrinkles

1. Dynamic or Expression Lines

These are formed with repetitive contraction and relaxation movement. Smile or forehead lines are examples of a dynamic line. In time, however, these lines can become permanent.

2. Static Wrinkles or Lines

Can start to show even when we are at rest and are due to the continued loss of support structures in the skin.

3. Sleep Wrinkles or Compression Lines

These are formed when we sleep or lean against something for an extended period.

4. Deeper Gravitational Folds

These show on the face where there are natural creases.

How do Wrinkles Form?

In skin ageing, the reduced number of fibroblasts whose role is to synthesise collagen, leads to an increase in laxity, and as collagen and elastin synthesis decreases by approximately 1% each year, this leads to disorganisation of connective tissue, causing skin wrinkles in the dermis.

Lines and wrinkles can be attributed to natural genetic (intrinsic) ageing and whilst our genes and skin structure integrity are important components, there is no doubt that there are other contributing factors which can accelerate ageing.

Known as external (extrinsic) factors, these factors include environmental influences that have an impact in accelerating ageing such as:

Sun, Inflammation, Free Radical Damage/Oxidative Stress, Smoking, Diet, and Health Concerns.

What is the Solution?

Prevention is better than cure, so maintaining and protecting your skin to keep it healthy, hydrated and supported is a key aspect to a resilient skin barrier and the ageing process.

1

Invest in plant active skincare that include plant vitamins C, E, A, K, phyto-active rich antioxidants like amino acids, protocatechuic acid and nourishing essential fatty acids.

2

Increasing cell turnover is also important as cell renewal starts to slow down

3

Apply the ‘slip slop slap and slide rule’ when it comes to suncare, and be consistent with applying spf, even on a cloudy day.

4

Diet and lifestyle choices can impact the way you age. Avoid smoking, alcohol, overprocessed foods and sugar where you can.

5

Hydrate inside and outside for a glowing plump complexion.
